Get ready for SLOC's garage sale
By Dennis Romboy Deseret News staff writer
Don't expect to find cool stuff like pool tables or video games. But if you're in the market for used linens or office furniture keep your eye out for the big Olympic garage sale.
The Salt Lake Organizing Committee plans to liquidate its leftovers in April.
Public agencies such as schools and local governments will get first crack at items like chairs, tables, cabinets, printers and fire extinguishers to be stored in two large Salt Lake warehouses. A public sale of whatever remains "lots of miscellaneous this and that," according to SLOC finance director Gordon Crabtree will follow.
SLOC will advertise the sales in local newspapers. Merchandise will be priced ahead of time.
Some Olympic souvenirs such as thousands of street banners and opening ceremonies props might trickle down to the public.
"It'll be interesting to see what ends up in the warehouses," Crabtree said.
Most of the big-ticket items included in SLOC's estimated $20 million liquidation budget were pre-sold to venues. The University of Utah, site for the Olympic Village and opening and closing ceremonies, has already bought telecommunications equipment set up for the Winter Games.
"We don't have far to go until we reach that target," he said.
Some 5,000 "Light the Fire Within" vehicles on loan from General Motors and 4,500 Gateway computers won't be part of the SLOC yard sale.
The sport utility vehicles and vans will go to local and out-of-state dealerships. Clamor for TrailBlazers, Tahoes and Astro vans began midway through the Olympics.
"People have been calling for a week," said Jeff Watkins, a salesman at Jerry Seiner Chevrolet, 1530 S. 500 West.
Gateway intends to donate the PCs to schools and local communities, giving priority to programs that provide access to technology to traditionally underserved groups.
SLOC has some of the sale items listed on its Web site www.saltlake2002.com but the page is a little tricky to find. Once the site is up, click on "Games Programs" then scroll down to "operations" and click. The information is listed under "asset liquidation."
The number of items listed will grow substantially after the Olympics and Paralympics, Crabtree said.
