Derek Parra shared his long-awaited moment with a sellout crowd at the Olympic Medals Plaza Tuesday night.
From the gold medalist's podium, the 31-year-old speedskater tearfully sang the U.S. national anthem along with an audible contingent of spectators.
The road to the Olympics has been a long one for Parra. His wife and 2-month-old daughter live in Florida, while he's been living and working in Utah.
"This is a nice moment, there's some satisfaction," he said. "(But) I don't know if it was worth it or not."
Parra is the United State's first double medalist, after earning a silver medal in last week's 5,000-meter event.
Also on Tuesday, Park City resident Joe Pack picked up a silver medal in men's aerials.
"It was crazy, walking out on the stage, seeing all the Park City signs, hearing everyone screaming and yelling," Pack said. "It was just the best thing. (I kept having) flashes of family members that have always been there for me."
      Tuesday's medals include:

  • Freestyle skiing, men's aerials: Gold, Ales Valenta, Czech Republic; silver, Joe Pack, USA; bronze, Alexei Grichin, Bulgaria.

  • Cross country skiing, women's 1.5km sprint free: Gold, Julija Tchepalova, Russia; silver, Evi Sachenbacher, Germany; bronze, Anita Moen, Norway.
