Crime Rate Down During Games

KSL-TV

Statistics show that crime has actually gone down during the Games. News Specialist Coco Warner explains.
"Yes, the crime rate does go down, and I think that's because even thebad people get caught up in the Olympic spirit," explains Col. Earl Morrisof the Utah Highway Patrol.
So far during the month of February, Salt Lake police have handled 1,000 fewer cases than they would in a normal February.

  • Criminal cases: down 12%
  • Robbery: down 19 percent
  • Auto Theft: down 2percent
  • Assault: down 19 percent
Overall, the number of criminal cases is down 12 percent. Robberies inthe city are down 19 percent. And fewer people are getting their cars stolen while the Games are here. Even assaults are down by nearly 20 percent.
Another big reason for the decrease in crime is the presence of so muchlaw enforcement. There are 9,000 police officers patrolling the Olympicarea. There are less than 5,000 in the state of Utah without the Olympics.
Col. Morris says, "We hope that this next week goes as well as theprevious week. We'll continue to be out in force and hopefully we'll get thesame results."
Most visitors welcome the high profile police presence.
"Security is great," Olympic visitor Hugh Robertson told us. "Town'sexcellent. Couldn't be happier."
Another interesting statistic: According to the Utah Highway Patrol, even the number of speeding tickets are down along the freeways.
There are a couple of areas where crime has gone up-- pick-pocketing andpurse-snatching.
There are 113 more cases so far this month compared to the sameperiod last year.
