Cultural corner

By Scott Iwasaki and Dave Gagon

If you're at the Gallivan Center, stop in at the Corning Museum of Glass pavilion in the northeast corner, next to the Budweiser Clydesdales. The exhibit boasts a portable 300-pound furnace, which burns at 2,350 degrees and contains molten glass.
It makes for the only warm, outdoor place on the plaza.
This furnace, along with several smaller ones, is the centerpiece for the Corning glassblowers who skillfully demonstrate the blowing of various glassworks.
Using methods that haven't changed since medieval times in Venice, Italy, artist Bill Gudenrath and two assistants dazzle the crowd with the step-by-step process for creating beautiful works, such as a dragon-stemmed goblet.
The glassblowers begin presentations at the bottom of each hour from 2:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

OUT AND ABOUT: Bob Saget, who was apparently booed each night he was the emcee at the Medals Plaza last week, slipped up last Tuesday when he introduced funky rhythm-and-blues singer Macy Gray as "one of the best bands in the world."

      • Orange Country rock band Lit was last seen performing for an estimated 20,000 people at the halfpipe competition in Park City last week. The band will return to play the Ice Village on Feb. 21. When asked during an interview how the Park City concert was, lead guitarist Jeremy Popoff said, "Cool — no, really it was very cold and we froze our tails off."

DON'T MISS: "Women Beyond Borders" exhibit in the Art Access Gallery, 339 W. Pierpont Ave. This display features 125 wooden boxes created by women artists from 33 countries making individual statements. Open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Free.

      • Also at the Art Access Gallery: "The Brian & Joe Show," featuring paintings by Brian Kershisnik and Joseph Adams.

      • Berlin and Diamond Mania at the Ice Village, 100 S. 550 West, 9 p.m. Tickets available at the door for $26.
