Rulon Gardner improving
Sam Penrod
KSL-TV
Rulon Gardner is out of ICU and has been upgraded to fair condition. News Specialist Sam Penrod reports.
He's said to be in good spirits and improving as he continues to recover from his ordeal Thursday night near his hometown of Afton, Wyoming.
Gardner spent the night alone in the mountains near Afton, after his snowmobile got stuck. Temperatures Thursday night dipped to around 15 degrees below zero. Gardner had also fallen into water before he was rescued Friday morning.
He is suffering from frostbite on his feet, and the warming process will take a few more days before doctors will know if there is permanent damage.
As far as his future as a wrestler, family and friends say for now, they are only concerned about Gardner's recovery.
"We want to be clear," says business manager Michael Stuttle. "The purpose of our news conference is to let you know that we are evaluating his medical condition. His career by all means is secondary at this point."
Rulon's father Reid said, "So we're going to be here to support Rulon what we can, and hopefully this will turn out like everybody is praying for."
Gardner became an American hero after his stunning defeat of a Russian wrestler which captured him the gold medal in Sydney during the summer Olympics in 2000.
Doctors are still not giving specifics about how long Gardner will be hospitalized or if the frostbite will require surgery.
