Crosswalk flags jazzed up
Salt Lake pedestrians can now display original works of art while they cross city streets, by waving the bright orange flags posted at crosswalks around West Temple, Pierpont and nearby downtown roads.
Grade-school children have painted 500 of the pedestrian flags with Olympic-themed artwork. Six of the downtown's busiest crosswalks are to be equipped with the flags starting this afternoon.
"People should use our flags," said fourth-grader Sylvia Sierra, "so cars can see them and they won't get run over."
Five Salt Lake elementary schools and the Sorenson Multi-Cultural Center took part in the flag-painting effort.
