KSL-TV
Hundreds of people waited in long lines at the Roots Storein Park City for those popular "Team U.S.A." berets the U.S. athletes arewearing.
Police were called in to offer a bit of crowd control in case things gotout of hand while people waited in line. Apparently, shoppers kept theircool.
At Gateway plaza in Salt Lake, people stood in long lines in the cold to buy a beret.
Call it the U.S.A. beret craze. Hundreds of people are standing in linefor a 20-dollar hat.
Roots, the official supplier of Team USA berets, has four stores in Utah, including two at the Gateway Mall, selling the hottest Olympic item.
We noticed people lining up at 6:30 am to get inside.
"Actually, we were here at 6:00, and finally got in line at 6:30," says Glen Ralston.
Melodie Johnson bundled her babies and braved the cold, all for theberet.
"They are just popular. You have to get what's popular."
Even the National Guard wants in on the fashion phenomenon. Sergeant Fred Vance stood in line to get a beret. Of course, he already has a National Guard beret, but he admits it's just not as cool.
The store's shipment of berets arrives at 9:30 am. The doors open at10:00. In the background, the crowd roars.
