The column blasted the way Salt Lake has hosted the Olympics, and took several direct shots at Utah ski resorts, Olympic preparations, and Mormon Culture.
At one point, sports writer Woody Paige writes: "Salt Lake City has royally screwed up the Olympics."
A variety of Utahns, including Salt Lake's mayor, took exception to the article. Many flooded the Post with angry phone calls.
Radio talk shows, including the Doug Wright show on KSL News Radio today, devoted considerable time to Utahns who wanted to vent their anger over the column.
Paige wrote the games are, "a massive Mormon marketing scheme." He said the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has put representatives out on street corners and at venues to hand out, "Mormon Literature."
He was apparently referring to religious activists from other denominations who are circulating materials downtown.
The Denver Post has taken the article off of its website.
Late Wednesday, we received an email from the Editor of the Denver Post.

He writes "I agree the column was inappropriate. I should have never run in the first place. We pulled it from the website, so as not to expose more people to it."
He says Paige will be writing an apology in his column Thursday.
Woody Paige has been known for sharp words before. He's called Baltimore "Balt-i-less" and said Tucson is the city where "A Sewer Runs Through It."
The locals in those towns got angry about that. Apparently now it's Salt Lake's turn.
      Some Emails We've Received
"I was absolutely amazed at the poor quality of writing and the flat out lies and false information. He even misquotes the 2002 Olympic theme, how hard is it to get that right?

"If the comments he made in that article had been madeabout the Jewish religion or Islam, you wouldn'thesitate to fire him."

"Mr. Paige has obviously not been to Utah, nor has he attended any of the games. Everyone in the world that has actually attended the games should provide first hand information about the Olympics to Mr. Paige. By providing actual research for him, it may help him to write more accurate articles for his newspaper."
