Men's hockey: Austrians win first Olympic game since '94
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah Gerhard Unterluggauer scored the game-winner with 9:09 to play and Simon Wheeldon had a goal and an assist as Austria beat Slovakia 3-2 Tuesday.
Neither team will reach the medal round, but it was the first victory for Austria (1-2) in the Olympic tournament since beating Norway in 1994.
"It's a great win for Austrian hockey," Wheeldon said. "We should have beaten Germany and it was nice to see us not give up. We couldn't come back in other games but tonight you could see our hard work."
Among countries entered in the preliminary round, Slovakia (0-3) had more NHL players than any other team. However, the Slovaks didn't have most of those players available Tuesday and used only 11 skaters.
"It's very disappointing for us. It's like a bad dream," said Richard Linter, who scored to tie it at 2-2 with 12:07 remaining in the second period.
