Take a tour of the tastes of Utah

Visitors who think a "taste of Utah" means only fry sauce and Jell-O will be pleasantly surprised to find more diverse foods at the Product of Utah Olympic store on the south side of the Gallivan Center (49 E. 200 South).
Located in the row of shops next to the Wells Fargo Building (and SLOC headquarters), the store offers such diverse made-in-Utah products as gourmet cocoa mix, sourdough bread, cookies, black currant juice, pancake mix, teriyaki pork jerky, berry jam and syrups, bottled water, sea salt and apples.
"This is a chance to take a taste-bud tour of the state, while enjoying the Olympic festivities," said Barbara McFarland of McFarlands Foods, Inc., who is chairing the project. "These very popular food products are produced throughout the state, from St. George in the south to Logan in the north and all points in between."
Participating companies include Bear Creek Country Kitchens; Coeur d'alene French Baking Company; Cookies by Design; Coventry Classics; Fellers Precooked Meats, Inc.; Kencraft; McFarlands Foods, Inc.; Mount Olympus Waters, Inc.; Mountainland Apples; Redmond Minerals; Rocky Mountain Organic Lamb; Stephen's Gourmet Cocoas; The MudMaker; Utah Dairy Commission; Utah Pork Producers; Lehi Roller Mills; and Weeks Berries of Paradise.
Chums eyeglass holders and Navajo rugs from Adopt-a-Native Elder Program are two non-food items also sold in the store.
There are two dining tables, so shoppers can sit down and enjoy a sandwich made with Coeur d'alene bread or various Utah-made drinks and bottled water. Many of the products come in souvenir-style gift packs.
McFarland said the idea for a Utah-products group came from the Utah Department of Agriculture. "So, we formed an association and pitched in money to pay for our overhead costs."
In the store, McFarland has made a display of many other Utah food products that chose not to join the association, to give visitors an idea of the wide variety of foods that are made here. "I was surprised to find so many different products made here in Utah, she said.
The store is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.
