PETA seeks new ruling on Olympics
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are not happy with a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that it has no jurisdiction over the Olympic rodeo.
PETA has written to the president of the court's ad hoc division, Raghunandan S. Pathak, requesting that the arbitration group reconsider its decision not to hear PETA's case, which seeks to stop the Olympic rodeo from taking place.
PETA last week asked CAS to cancel the rodeo or at least order it not be billed as an Olympic event. CAS said it had no jurisdiction in the matter, that the rodeo is part of the Olympic Arts Festival and therefore is not governed by the Olympic Charter.
In the letter to Pathak, PETA legal counsel Matthew Penzer noted that the Olympic Charter requires the organizing committee of the Olympic Games to put together a program of cultural events, of which the rodeo is part. He also noted that the rule says the program "must serve to promote harmonious relations, mutual understanding and friendship among the participants and others attending the Olympic Games" something he said a program that "involves the kind of violence toward animals that the rodeo does" cannot accomplish.
"The CAS's decision was wrong and the result of it is that the IOC may now freely sanction the most egregious acts of violence so long as it doesn't issue any medals for them," said Penzer, who released the letter to the media Monday.
CAS has not indicated whether it will reconsider.
