3 planes intercepted for airspace violations
Deseret News and Associated Press
Fighter jets from Hill Air Force Base have intercepted three planes since Friday afternoon that violated restricted Olympic airspace.
The latest incident occurred Sunday when a private jet flew into the restricted area, said North American Aerospace Defense Command Maj. Douglas Martin. Two F-16s diverted the plane back to where it came from without further incident, he said.
The first airspace violation occurred 1:45 p.m. Friday by a private jet from Colorado Springs. The Secret Service deployed two F-16s from Hill's 388th Fighter Wing to intercept the jet. The fighters escorted the plane to Salt Lake City International Airport.
A few hours later at 4:44 p.m. the Federal Aviation Administration called for the fighters to intercept a Lear Jet that had taken off from Nebraska, Martin said. The plane landed in Brigham City, escorted by the fighters, he said.
Airspace over Salt Lake is restricted to a radius 45 miles around the airport. It is also restricted around all the Olympic venues.
