Sandy TRAX parking lots overflow
By Pat Reavy Deseret News staff writer
SANDY Police here say TRAX was very popular over the weekend with many people seeking parking spots at Jordan High School and wherever else they could find them.
But that is about to end.
The TRAX parking lots at 9000 South and South Towne Center filled up early Saturday and Sunday, forcing passengers at South Towne to park their vehicles at nearby Jordan High School.
"It looked like a day of school there were so many people in the parking lot," Sandy Police Lt. Kevin Thacker said.
That was fine for the weekend, but Monday the students will need those spots. Officers will be at the high school Monday turning away vehicles that aren't carrying students or teachers.
"Obviously (the students) have first choice to park there," Thacker said.
Saturday and Sunday cars spilled onto the side streets as the regular lots filled up early.
"It's ugly. It's a mess," Thacker said. "They're parking literally everywhere."
The lot at South Towne was particularly busy, Thacker said, because a lot of people from Utah County parked in Sandy and took TRAX the rest of the way to Salt Lake City.
Drivers were pulling off the road at 9800 South leading up to the South Towne lot and parking in the grass because there was no other room, Thacker said.
Once they found a parking spot, those people then had to find a place in line. At one point Saturday morning Thacker said the line to get on TRAX was more than a block long.
The key to successfully riding TRAX from Sandy to Salt Lake City is to simply plan ahead, Thacker said. "It will be frustrating if you don't," he said. He advised people to plan on leaving about three hours earlier than they normally would.
The parking lots are only expected to get busier this week as people who use TRAX to go to work compete with Olympic revelers for a spot on the train.
After school is over, Thacker said, drivers can use the high school parking lot again.
