Salt Lake wins high marks as host

Bruce Lindsay

The early reviews of the Games credit Salt Lake with a gold medal performance.
Maybe early on they're easy graders. But from the IOC, to the athletes, to the spectators, to visiting reporters — of all people — the buzz Sunday was extremely positive. And organizers are feeling very good.
"I just came from a Coordination Commission meeting," said SLOC President Mitt Romney. "The athletes' representative from the Athletes' Commission said, 'We have nothing but praise for today.' "
Spectators who drove through Parley's Canyon to see competitions generally found smooth sailing and no delays, if they left on time.
Dreaded gridlock did not materialize at Olympic venues in the valley, either.
"It's been wonderful," Vicki Rogers told us. "We went downtown. We visited the Medals Plaza, and we went up to Park City to the Olympic Park. Everything's been wonderful. We took the bus up and back. It was all very smooth."
At the E Center Park & Walk lot Sunday afternoon, spectators said they were pleasantly surprised.
"It's been really great," said Scott Love of West Jordan. "We came last night to a hockey game and we were in and out within 15 mintues after the game. It was really smooth. It was planned a lot better than I think what they were expecting."
At Olympic Square downtown, where people were standing in line to enter the superstore, we went looking for a discouraging word and couldn't find one.
Dan Malasky, from Maryland, told us, "It's going phenominal. It started out with the Opening Ceremonies, which were just an absolute ten. And the women's freestyle moguls yesterday, and capped off with the men's downhill today. Just can't beat it! Not at all."
We figured we could find some complaints from visiting reporters holed up in the Salt Palace. And maybe it's because they're getting free massages, but the ones we met said the information system is working, their buses are running, and the sheets are clean.
"And people have been very, very friendly," insists Suzanne Blake of the Canadian Broadcasting Company. "And that's — sometimes when you're having a bad day, for other reasons — that means a lot. And people have been commenting on the friendliness of Utahns. And that's been delightful."
Three days into Salt Lake's Olympics the verdict is," so far, so good."
