Olympian E. Neumann dies

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Erhard M. "Butch" Neumann, a St. Louis native and member of the 1956 U.S. Olympic cycling team, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, while skiing near his home in Utah.
Mr. Neumann was 69 when he died of an apparent heart attack.
Mr. Neumann graduated from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1956 with a metallurgy degree, along the way developing into a world-class athlete, specializing in bicycle races of at least 100 miles.
He was a member of the U.S. team in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, and a member of the 1957 World Cycling Team.
Mr. Neumann later worked for 36 years for a local metallurgy company before retiring in 1998 and moving to Draper, Utah.
In 1996, Mr. Neumann carried the Olympic torch in St. Louis as it made its way to the Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta.
He is survived by his wife, Tootie Buchheit Neumann, a daughter, and two sons. A memorial Mass will be Feb. 16 in Salt Lake City.
