Transit plan called success
Judging by reactions from folks who live near Rice-Eccles Stadium, the transportation plan for the opening ceremonies was a roaring success.
Although nearly every street within eight blocks of the stadium was lined with parked cars and buses were backed up along 1300 East for nearly four blocks on both sides of 400 South, few homeowners in the area had gripes.
Afton Hales, 69, said she experienced no difficulty Friday driving to and from her home located just off the south side of the stadium near the University of Utah.
The same went for Boyd Randall, who drove from Provo Friday afternoon to watch the opening ceremonies at his mother's house. His mother lives near Hales.
Randall says the roads were as clear as any other day.
Indeed, aside from a few isolated complaints, nearby neighbors treated the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Games as if it were just another U. football game.
Salt Lake City parking-enforcement officials said the number of illegally parked cars Friday was comparable to other events.
But not all was well at the Delta Delta Delta house. Sorority gal Amy Deneff was irked she couldn't easily drive to the house. It took Deneff an hour to drive from 600 South to the U.
Paula Odom, a bus driver from Culver City, Co., said she rated the transportation a "five on a scale of one to 10."
Gabrial Behrand, a SLOC driver who delivered the Greek consulate to Friday's ceremonies, said streets were very clear of traffic Friday. In fact, he said, the roads were easier to navigate than most days during rush hour.
Mike Mattison, a bus driver from Salem, Ore., said he thought things went well, especially "considering the scale of the operation."
