Olympic flag borne by world greats
The eight bearers of the Olympic flag were a collection of prominent individuals.
Five of the eight represented the five continents of the five-ring Olympic symbol, and three represented the three pillars of the Olympic movement.
The five on behalf of the continents included former astronaut and U.S. senator John Glenn (representing the Americas), former Polish movement leader and politician Lech Walesa (representing Europe), Archbishop Desmond Tutu (representing Africa), 1998 Japanese gold-medalist ski jumper Kazuyoshi Funaki (representing Asia), 2000 Australian gold-medalist runner and Sydney caldron-lighter Cathy Freeman (representing Oceania).
And the three for the Olympic-movement pillars included Jean-Claude Killy, France's three-gold alpine skier and current IOC member (representing sport); renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg (representing culture); and Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of oceanographer Jacques Cousteau (representing environment).
