Morning winds give Oly organizers jitters

This morning's winds sent 2002 Winter Olympic organizers, officials and athletes scrambling, with locals wondering if the gusts were an omen, a jinx or just opening-day jitters from Mother Nature.
The winds postponed the Games' inaugural event — K90 ski-jumping qualifications at Utah Olympic Park, which were scheduled for this morning. They were canceled for the day.
Alpine skiers hoping to practice today at Snowbasin for Sunday's and Monday's downhill events were forced off the mountain by high winds and dense fog. The postponement served as the latest bad-weather bugaboo for Snowbasin, which has had a two-year series of international skiing events plagued by weather woes.
Organizers of tonight's opening ceremonies were also watching the wind gusts with concern. High winds during the evening performance at Rice-Eccles Stadium may force producers to eliminate some special-effect costumes that rise 20-plus feet in the air.
