New doping rules to honor IOC wishes
The head of the World Anti-Doping Agency promised fundamental changes in rules so the International Olympic Committee will not ever again be overruled when barring an athlete from the Games.
"We will amend the Olympic Charter to provide for the IOC to refuse" to admit an athlete if it chooses, said Richard Pound, chairman of the agency.
Pound didn't mince words when asked about this week's Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling that allowed Latvian bobsledder Sandis Prusis back into the Games after the IOC said he could not compete.
"It's a very disappointing outcome, a disgrace. I think the athlete himself should be ashamed. It's not fair, it's not right and it taints the athletes themselves."
Prusis had been suspended for three months after testing positive for a banned steroid. His ban was to have expired this week, but the IOC said the athlete would not be welcome to compete in Salt Lake.
