World Cup biathlon win: It's as Luck would have it

Associated Press

BREZNO-OSRBLIE, Slovakia — Frank Luck led a 1-2 German finish in the men's 20-kilometer individual biathlon Wednesday as the World Cup competition moved to this central Slovak resort.
Luck completed the race in 54 minutes, 8.2 seconds, with one missed shooting target. Sven Fischer secured second place, just 0.7 seconds behind Luck, but Fischer missed two targets.
Russia's Sergei Rozhkov also made two mistakes in shooting, and trailed in third, 38.4 seconds behind Luck.
Last week's winner of the same event in Pokljuka, Slovenia — Pavel Rostovtsev of Russia — came in 15th. He was more than two minutes late and missed four shooting targets.
Some leading competitors, such as France's Raphael Poiree, did not enter. In the previous two seasons, the race at Brezno-Osrblie had to be canceled due to lack of snow.
The competition continues Thursday with the women's 15-kilometer race.
