USA Hockey's Bush to be honored
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.USA Hockey president Walter L. Bush Jr., Edina, Minn., has been named a recipient of the Olympic Order, the highest possible individual honor in international athletics.
The International Ice Hockey Federation and the International Olympic Committee will honor Bush with the Olympic Order at the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
The Olympic Order is awarded to a person who has illustrated the Olympic ideal through his or her actions, has achieved remarkable merit in the sporting world or has rendered outstanding services to the Olympic cause. This includes personal achievement and contribution to the development of sport.
One of the most recognized and respected leaders in hockey, Bush has served as president of USA Hockey for more than 15 years and has been a member of the organization's board of directors since 1959. Bush became president of USA Hockey in June 1986.
Bush serves as one of 11 members of the International Ice Hockey Federation Council and is in second consecutive term as vice president of the IIHF.
As chairman of the Women's Ice Hockey Committee, Bush was instrumental in organizing the first IIHF Women's World Championship in 1990. He also led the charge that made women's ice hockey a medal sport in the Olympic Winter Games, making its debut in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.
Other recipients within the sport of hockey who have received the Olympic Order include Peter Stastny, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Miroslav Subrt and Wayne Gretzky.
