Curling
The sport that boasts the odd mix of ice, stones and brooms actually dates back to 16th century Scotland, as river rocks were sent gliding atop frozen lochs and ponds toward a target some distance away. The Scots had formalized rules, equipment and clubs by the mid-1800s, with the sport imported to North America and beyond later that century.
In curling, 42-pound stones are housepattern as it skims across the ice next three-quarters of a century. Curling returned as a demonstration sport at five subsequent Olympics arning medal status as a sport at the close of the 20th Century.
