What it's known for: Robert Redford created this community of art and nature in 1969. It boasts a summer professional outdoor theater, family entertainment and world-class dining (the Tree Room is consistently rated as one of the best dining experiences in the state). The resort is a scenery-lover's paradise, with Mt. Timpanogos as a backdrop.

If you go: Eat lunch at Bear Claw, the only mountaintop lodge in the state with a 360 degree panoramic view. A walk through the Sundance General Store is a must for any visitor. Be sure to check out the resort's photos and Sundance Film Festivals, too. The Art Shack offers a whole range of artistic displays and demonstrations in glass-bowling, pottery, papermaking and drawing. The Owl Bar, which belonged to Butch Cassidy and the Hole in the Wall gang, was moved from Thermopolis, Wyo., in the mid-1990s.
Best kept secret: If you are looking for fresh snoweven days after a stormgo to Junior's Run, named after Junior Bounous, who cut the run during the early days for the resort. Bounous saw was that the location and fall line were prefect for a great powder run. Since it is located off the Flathead lift, which is typically uncrowded, skiers often have the run all to themselves. From the top of Flathead lift, hang a right to Grizzly Bowl and then off to the left to Junior's Run.
