Wheeler Historic Farm

For a step back in history, right smack dab in the middle of a big city, spend a day at Wheeler Historic Farm in southeast Salt Lake City.
The farm has been a Utah landmark for more than 100 years. When it looked like development might replace the farm, Salt Lake County purchased the 75 acres and turned it into a park.
Since 1976, the farm has been open to the public for tours, camps, wedding receptions, birthday parties and the like. But the main attractions seem to be the farm animals, natural wildlife and farm museum. Recently, an antique farm machinery building and art gallery opened at the farm.
The park is a great place to learn about history and farm life just a short distance from downtown Salt Lake City. With the public allowed to help milk cows and gather chicken eggs, the park is also educational and interactive. On many days visitors will find a blacksmith performing his trade.
Probably the most popular area of the farm is the animal corral, where children can pet the rabbits, feed a lamb a bottle of milk and romp around with a baby calf. But most visitors find added excitement when they spot a flock of wild geese or ducks, or a mule deer or two wandering through the fields and trees.
While the animals are fun to see, pet and feed, there are also other activities, like the tractor rides. The tractor takes groups of people throughout the farm's back acreage along Little Cottonwood Creek — past the campground, the amphitheater, the wetlands and the draft horses.
Wheeler Historic Farm is located on 900 East at about 6300 South. Admission is free and tokens are available to purchase for tours, wagon rides and cow milking. For more information call 801-264-2241 or go to www.wheelerfarm.com/.
