The most extensive genealogical research technology and facilities in the world are run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The facilities are available to anyone, church members and non-members, who want to trace their family tree.
Those new to genealogy should begin at the FamilySearch Center, located on the first and fourth floors of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, 15 E. South Temple. The center has more than 150 computers for researching family history. A large staff is also available to assist those with no experience in searching family records.
The center is open Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission, and use of the computers, is free. For more information call 801-240-4085.
The more experienced genealogists usually move down the street to search the world's largest collection of genealogical records in books, and on microfilm and micofiche at the Family History Library. The library is staffed with many experienced genealogists, who provide assistance to those wanting information about their ancestors.
The church began gathering records for tracing ancestry back in 1894. Today, the library has records of more than 2 billion names. The system is also assisted by more than 3,400 libraries in 65 countries.
Almost a million people visit the Family History Library each year. The library is located at 35 N. West Temple. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, and 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. For more information call 801-240-2331.
