The national Olympic committees are identified in Olympic setting by a three-letter acronym representing the country or territory's name. Often the acronym is the first three letters of the nation's name or key letters from a multi-word name.
Some three-letter NOC acronyms are based on the country's name in its native language, or in French, which is an official Olympic language. Also similarities between national names - such as Austria and Australia or Iran and Iraq - require some deviation among acronyms.
