A RISING SUN
After departing its comfortable European confines eight years earlier for the United States, the 1940 Games head off in a new direction G SRC="/img/point.gif" WIDTH="13" HEIGHT="9" VALIGN="MIDDLE">HOSTING HOT POTATO
At war with China in 1938, Japan withdraws as host of the 1940 Games. With St. Moritz tabbed as an alternate site, Switzerland also withdraws, citing the ongoing dispute about ski instructors and the alpine events. In the summer of 1938, Germany suggests the Games return to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Later that year, the Winter Olympics are canceled by the onslaught of World War II.
