'Superb Games'
Utah: The dream is over. With swirling skaters, celebrity singers, aerial acrobats, the child of light, giant buoyant "snowballs," wise-cracking "dinosaurs" and a thundering fireworks spectacular over northeast Salt Lake City the likes of which the Beehive State has never seen before, the XIXth Winter Games concluded Sunday night in Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium.

83% give thumbs up to the Olympics
Utahns like the Olympics. They really like the Olympics. And they would do it all over again. A new Deseret News/KSL-TV poll found an unprecedented 83 percent of residents — now with the benefit of hindsight — favor Salt Lake City hosting the 2002 Winter Games.

Winter Games Top 10 Stories
The 2002 Winter Games were marked by unprecedented controversies, a record medal haul for the host country and storylines with more Hollywood endings than a movie multiplex. Deseret News editors selected the following as the Games' Top 10 stories:

Medals: Made in Utah
As you probably know, the gold, silver and bronze Olympic medals were manufactured by the O.C.Tanner Company here in Salt Lake. We've seen how the finished products look, and these designs are perhaps the most unusual ever made for the Olympics. But we thought you'd like to see how they were actually made.

Oly boom is unlikely, economist predicts
The 2002 Olympics are over, but the athletes — not Utah's economy — may be the only ones getting the gold. Thayne Robson, while believing the Winter Games were beneficial to the state in many ways and "a huge success," nonetheless said Tuesday that their legacy likely will not feature an economic boost.

Critics see Games as a mixed bag
An outspoken critic of the political chicanery inherent in the Olympic movement, Ken Bullock remembers being lectured about how the community would come together once people saw the Olympic torch. But Bullock, who represents the interests of local government as a director on the Salt Lake Organizing Committee board, was doubtful until he stood on a street corner in Lehi earlier this month as thousands greeted the arrival of the torch.

Rogge hails Olympic Village, heaps superlatives on Games
The only "best-ever" designation the 2002 Winter Games will earn from the new International Olympic Committee president is for housing for athletes. IOC President Jacques Rogge said after he was elected last July that he would not rank each Games. His predecessor, Juan Antonio Samaranch, made the often-controversial remarks.

Pin trading
The most often-asked question of the Olympics is, "Do you have any pins?" Pin trading is a huge past-time during the Games, and not just here! Olympic pins first showed up at the Los Angeles Games in 1984. Since then, they've become an obsession for people all over the world.

2002 Paralympics: Beyond limits
The 2002 Winter Paralympic Games were much more than a footnote to the Olympics: The events were exciting to watch and the athletes were an inspiration. After the high-strung crowds, highly intense competition and hyperactivity of the Olympics, the Paralympics were a good opportunity for spectators to get life back into perspective.
