2009-10 EDUCATIONAL SECTIONS — New: "Striking gold at This Is The Place Heritage Park." Download PDF copies of all our specially-published educational sections, including "Constitutional Freedoms," "Get Off the Bench and Into the Game," "At Home on the Range," "Underage Drinking," "Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life," "Children at Risk," "Banking on Math," and "Wonders of Our Wetlands."

2009-10 SERIALIZED STORIES — "The Gate of No Return" — (DATES: Sept. 15, 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1, 8, 15, 22 {no story on Dec. 29}, Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26 Feb. 2) Axle grew up believing he was a manarkin boy living in the neat, orderly and sometimes boring village of Kamoo located on the planet Mizmoe, but on his twelfth year reality came crashing down around him. Suddenly he was transformed into a human boy and was forced to leave Kamoo and his mother behind. Axle passed through the Gate of No Return and entered into the wild and unruly realm of Bedlam. Follow Axle though Bedlam as he tries to find a creature named Nacklenod who can help him read the Book of Equates. This action-packed adventure is sprinkled with funny, 'punny' wordplay and slapstick humor. This hilarious adventure is targeted to third through fifth grade readers. It is also an A/R book which means that students that attend schools that use the Accelerated Reader program can take the test and earn A/R points!

CONNECT 1-2-3 — Coming soon, watch for a new section of this site just for kids, to use with CONNECT 1-2-3. An archive of previous content is still available for download. This free weekly student newspaper for Utah schools can be ordered with the Deseret News once each month and provides three weeks of activities and newspaper reading in its pull-out sections. Reading CONNECT 1-2-3 provides students with a foundation for newspaper reading and becoming lifelong readers. It introduces great information to kids in school and parents at home for "work together" success. It gives teachers more tools to prepare students for what's happening currently in their world. It provides safety tips, reading ideas, holiday games, a look at real heroes and amazing facts. It enables families to discuss current events together, as Deseret News subscribers will receive it in their paper at homes while their students read it in school, making it easy to include in dinner-time conversation. It's a great new way to help develop literacy and reading!

MONTHLY, TOPICAL ACTIVITIES TO USE IN CLASS — The NIE Web site features newspaper activities for classrooms, including monthly activities that are geared to events and anniversaries on that month's calendar. See the index at left to access activities or to order curriculum items that can give you more ideas for using the Deseret News in the classroom. See the drop-down menu on the index when you click on either K-6 or 7-12.

TOO GOOD TO MISS — With this service in the Current Events page of this Web site, Too Good to Miss is a series of links to information that ran in the Deseret News that is particularly educational and "too good to miss." We hope you'll enjoy printing these pieces that previously ran in the paper and using them in your classrooms.

ARCHIVE OF TEACHER'S GUIDES — An archive of past Teacher's Guides is now available, allowing you to print to use each month with current activities for teaching with the newspaper.

SECURE ORDERING — We have a secure ordering system, protecting the personal information you share with us. You can order classroom newspapers, educational sections and other products without worry.

KIDS LEARN BETTER WITH A NEWSPAPER — A study released by the Newspaper Association of America Foundation shows data indicating students in NIE programs do 10 percent better on standardized tests, that the greatest benefits of NIE are found in schools with large minority populations, and that significant increases in student performances occur in middle schools. Newspapers benefit learning, and the Deseret News NIE has a nationally-acclaimed program to help you raise test scores for Utah students.
