As expected, I knew I'd find wonderful, positive comments about "The Best LDS Film Ever" right here. This is where those involved in the film's production go to create buzz. Why? Because it's cheap.
Take a look at other film reviews by Jeff Vice and you'll notice very few get any comment at all. Yet, whenever an LDS-related film is reviewed, quite a few comments get posted, with such silly comments as "This is the best film ever," or my favorite, "This is the best film since Brigham City."
I saw Brigham City. It was okay, but noticeably cheap.
The fact is very few people have any interest in seeing a poorly conceived, written, directed, and acted film. Still, Deseret Book's movie arm continues to pump out such films.
I don't need to see anything beyond the trailer to know this one is a loser.
LDS cinema has become garbage and this is another example of it. Really dumb story that has no appeal. Believe me. It will bomb.

People who are just now finding out that Jeff Vice doesn't know how to rate movies from the viewers standpoint, should take note of it now. Consider this: he gave that dog "Jersey Girl" a high rating. Now my wife & I tend to rejoice when we notice that Jeff Vice didn't like a movie we plan to see. We will definitely go see Errand of Angles.

Stick to your guns Jeff. Mormon cinema is like cheap toys that come from America: You want to support it but it's crap compared to all of the good stuff coming from Taiwan! I'm LDS and I've served a mission, but really the stuff that members of the church put out is garbage. And I'm not about to see it, recommend it, buy it, and recommend others buy it just so I can support something that hasn't earned the right to thrive.
PEOPLE OF UTAH, LAY OFF 'THE VICE'!

Wow.
First Jeff Vice misquotes the director in a Deseret News article before the movie, making the director out to be negative about his peers.
Then Jeff Vice doesn't step up to calm the controversy he started.
Then Jeff Vice gives what is obviously one of the best LDS themed movies yet made a luke warm review.
Wow.
Not only am I going to be MUCH more cautious about believing anything Vice writes in the future, I'd caution all of you guys to do the same as well.
I don't know the director, I'm not affiliated with the movie, I'm just a movie fan and this IS a GOOD movie.
Vice must have some kind of ax to grind because he has been unduly hard on this film.
Compared to previous LDS themed films, this is definitely one of the best, and Vice should have been honest enough to say so.

I really enjoyed this movie. And unlike Mr Vice, I found the performance of the lead actress to be right on the money. She was ME as I struggled to learn new customs, a new language, and a different way of life. Her awkwardness was just that, not stiffness, or timidity. I say she captured her character very well. For those of you who are sick of awful LDS=themed movies: see this one. It's terrific!

I saw the movie last night and loved it! The casting was right-on and the performances and script were not over-the-top. I served my mission in Germany and learned to love the people and my mission companions. The message in this movie is one of love. Other religions are portrayed in movies and books. It is refreshing to see a film that allows the viewer to learn what motivates the service of thousands of young adult members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and to glimpse the growth they experience during the 18 months (in the case of sister missionaries) or 24 months they spend away from home to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. Kudos to everyone involved in making this movie!

I thought the quality of the movie, compared with other recent LDS films, was excellent. The acting and cinematography were done well. I also felt that it correctly represented what LDS missions are like, including the ups and downs as well as the common issues missionaries come across while trying to share LDS beliefs with others. However, I can see that I probably enjoyed it because I served as a sister missionary in Europe--for others who either didn't serve missions, didn't serve in Europe, or aren't LDS, there are definitely parts that could be considered slow. In a nutshell, I liked it and it was emotional for me to relive some of the similar experiences Sister Taylor had.

If you have any interest in the topic of Mormon missions, I encourage you to see this movie. Having served a German-speaking mission, I felt that common issues and experiences from a mission were accurately represented in this film, and that the story itself was interesting and well fleshed out.
In addition, the quality of production--filming, acting, editing, attention to detail--was superb. One example--the early German spoken by Ms. Chambers is absolutely atrocious, and successfully replicates what a typical new missionary would say.
The only drawback is if you don't like subtitles. About a quarter of the movie is in German, with English subtitles. If you can get past that, by all means go see this--it will entertain, enlighten, and inspire.
