It's such a shame that this "movie" won an oscar over a brilliant film like Traffic. It's a a murky, laughably bad historicaly inconsistent War-epic wannabe that could care less about it's theme, but wants to cram in excessive amounts of blood and guts. No, i'mnot a narrow-minded conservative idiot.... The Godfather, Taxi Driver, Rio Bravo, Pulp Fiction anad U-Turn are all violent American classics. But Gladiators potential isn't to be a good film. It's to appeal to the drooling, money-hungry masses. Typical Hollywood garbage.

Itz a pity i didnt go see this epic @ the cinemas, it must have been awesome. Excellent characters, storyline, acting & lavish huuuuge sets. A special mention must go to the engrossing score. Hans Zimmer's work here is spot on, & Lisa Gerard's haunting yet beautiful singing puts the icing on the cake. So which actor stands out? Two actually, Russell Crowe & Joaqin Phoenix. Thanks to their strong character portrayals, they keep the film interesting. U just wanna hang around to see what happens to them, I did anyway. Joaqin's 'Commodus' seems to go through the entire movie in agony, totally insecure & feeling unloved by everyone, I mean, going for ur sister? Although he's an a**, u can't help but feel sorry 4 him, great acting. As Maximus, Crowe is both captivating & a very dominant figure on screen, & shows a vulnerable side too. I noticed there was very little chemistry between him & Commodus' sister (forgot her name). Moving along, I liked the ending, although the final battle seemed a little anti climatic (wish it went a bit longer). All in all, a very good film, probably the best of 2000.

Wow! Gladiator is an instant classic. This is epic storytelling at its best. While the story itself may not be very innovative, it is the acting which makes it work. Russel Crowe is simply amazing. Even without speaking, his character is so intense and ferocious. This is sure to make him a superstar. Joaquin Phoenix also delivers a powerful perfomance in what may be an even more complex role than Crowe's. Don't miss this movie.

FINALLY!!!! A movie that has enough action and suspense that my husband is happy and a story so deep and honorable that I was extremely happy! One of the best movies I have ever seen. We have suggested this movie to everyone we know. And those who have seen it, have loved it.

A magnificent, powerful, epic movie. This is one of the best films to come out of Hollywood in a long time. The story, acting, and music are incredible. It is also based on much historic fact and I enjoyed the way much positive emphasis is placed on the importance of family and religion in the life of Maximus and how in the end-- the "right prevailed" over evil. I was pleasantly astounded to see Hollywood produce such an epic film that contains no sex, nudity, or profanity. It is only rated "R" because of the violence-- but remember-- all the blood is FAKE. There's more REAL violence in a football or basketball game-- and we all take our families to those events! Gladiator is an all-time GREAT movie that is truly uplifting and it's got my vote for Best Picture at the Academy Awards as well as Best Actor for Russell Crowe.

A grand and awesome spectacle, missing only the very thing that ancient Rome was missing: a true hero, who acts honorably because it is right.

I think this was an excellent movie. This is one of the better movies I have seen since bravehart. Everyone that hasn't seen it, should!!!!

Gladiator was reminicent to Braveheart in many ways but didn't grab your heart as fast or as long for the characters. Though they made the battle scenes realistic to the time period that was all it was, a battle scene. A lot of OOHING and AHHHHING when you see some of the brutal shots. But that's just it. As the movie progressed it seemed that they were trying to constantly better the last masacre. I could almost picture the creative members huddled around a table trying to see who could come up with the most grotesque scene and do one better. All said, I was entertained and would recommend this movie. Russell Crow gave new meaning to the the word TOGA, I say yes for teh dress:). Joquein Phoenix definetly stole the show with his excellent portrayal of the whining, back stabbing, power hungry insecure son of ceasar. He gave some substance to the storyline. All said it is entertaining for both sexes. No Sequel Here.

This is an excellent movie not only because of the action, but also because it portrays some aspects of history rarely ever seen on such a scale. From the fighting soldiers of the Roman phalanx to the poor living and eating conditions of slaves and gladiators, history has been re-enacted. Its just too bad that it received an "R" rating, because I'm sure it would make an excellent movie to use in a history class.

I didnt expect much more than a few nifty fight seens when I saw the movie trailers. I was very surprised to see such a moving, involved, and plot-driven film. I think it is the best movie of its kind, and definatly Russle Crowes best. His acting is amazing, becoming the character instead of "himself" in a new role. I am very impressed they kept swearing and sex out of the movie, making it almost one of a kind. Very good!

Although the movie was violent, I thought the acting was fantastic and I enjoyed the script. The cinematography was spectacular. You really felt like you were in Rome or Germania. I came away impressed. Russel Crowe was excellent and should get some consideration for best actor. Definitely not many dull moments in the 21/2 hours. THUMBS UP FROM ME.

This could very well be the next Braveheart - a real keeper.
LINDA | May. 8, 2000
True, the film had action and slow motion was effectively disbursed; we even liked the music. However, the film was just too dark, and without a real hero, other than Richard Crowe. There just wasn't anyone else to care about. My husband and I walked out of the theatre feeling depressed and let
