Reader comments: The Man in the Iron Mask
AVI GREEN | Dec. 11, 2000
Unfortunately, I found it to be pretty crummy, and even
Depardieu was badly misused. Ick. This has surely got to be
one of the dumbest versions of a classic ever to be filmed.
Even National Review said at the time that all they could
hear in the Iron Mask were mumblings. I really do wish that
both DiCaprio's could be placed in the Iron Mask, they're
both pretty awful. I was very shocked to read in the Boston
Globe some time ago that the film encouraged a young girl
who'd seen it to commit suicide in Florida about a year
ago. Groan...now I'm even more sorry I wasted my time on
this tripe. A film that can encourage kids to imitate the
acts of violence like what this movie boasts is not
something that I would ever want to recommend. Among the
very few things worthy of note here is where one of the
castle guards catches a rotten apple(the perfect
description for this movie) on his sword and chews it.
Viewers are strongly advised not to make the same mistake.

Blood and 'villains who are heros' annoy me something
chronic, because it is totally juxtaposed to my moral code.
Thus, an old fashined good vs evil swashbuckler really made
my day. The performances ranged from poor (DiCaprio) to
fantastic (The Muskateers) to plus-que-parfait (d'Artagnan)
I loved this movie, and I am proud to say it.

I thought this movie was very well acted. I am not a huge
fan of DiCaprio, however he managed to pull me into this
movie. His two completely different characters were well
acted, and completely spectacular. He made you love him,
and hate him. Very intense, and yet funny in some parts.
I
guess we all just have different opinions.

I loved this film, being a huge fan of historical films, that's no surprise. Anyone with a love of history, drama, and adventure will agree with me.
