Reader comments: The Beach

You are all silly heads. The Beach was an amazing movie with romance, adventure and style. Danny Boyle congratulations on such a magnificent movie and I hope to see more of your movies in the future. Oh yeh, and as for you DiCaprio, I loved you in that movie (not that I don't love you in all your movies, 'cos you're such a spunk) but all you people who disagree with me are just too scared to say you liked it. I think you should all go and run 100 laps of your nearest oval for your poor comments. And besides, did you ever stop and think what it would be like if you made a movie. So go away you silly billys. Na im just jokin guys, the movie sucked but at least you got a kick out of reading my review, hey?

Lame! Lame! Lame! Who thinks up screen-plays like this??

Frankly, I don't really care so much myself if DiCaprio's career gets washed up on the Beach. Gee whiz, what a ripoff! You come to a film like this expecting to see a charming romance, and unfortunately, you get nothing. Part of the problem is that we know virtually nothing, if at all, about the main character's backgrounds. And there's hardly any action or romance, or even a real sense of adventure. That's not saying that there has to be any actual sex scenes in the movie, but there should be plenty of kissing between the various men and women, and if there were some of that, then that could certainly have made it enjoyable. Sadly, there's only one kissing scene(well, okay, make that two, if you count a small scene in which Carlyle and Ledoyen neck) and one sex scene, the latter which is silhouetted behind a curtain. And I knew that the film was in trouble when DiCaprio made some[almost racist] criticsm of Carlyle when it was really he who was to blame above the waterfall. Oh, and as if the gore was neccassary! Most certainly not. It was also ridiculous as to how DiCaprio went along with the colony's method of not giving anyone proper medical attention as if he actually agreed with such ways. The only redeeming features here were the excellent location photography and escpecially Ledoyen, one of the foxiest Frenchwomen I've seen, who could hold my attention in almost every scene she was in(you know, it's amazing how some French babes have voices that sound so impressively mature). Sadly however, she just didn't get as much screen time as she should have. I sure hope that she'll go on to make some better movies than this. If there's anyone who deserves a prosperous movie career, it's Ledoyen, not DiCaprio. My overall rating for this dud is *1/2 stars.

Sorry folks, but this one in my book was a dud. I went and saw this movie mainly because Leonardo's other movies have been so good. From What's eating Gilbert Grape to Basketball diaries. This movie was just plain boring, there was very little action and or romance. The movie just never really grabbed me and I left feeling empty, not sure what to make of it. I would certainly not pay to see it again nor would I bother to buy the video. I gave it one star instead of a turkey rating only because the acting wasn't too bad and the plot didn't totaly stink, it was just boring.

Get over the pop-culture of the film for a second and you might realize that it actually depicts a generational desire for something new, something, different, something not of the west. While the script and direction were not the most brilliant I've ever encountered, I did appreciate the risks that were taken, even the since-dubbed "Rambo" scene and the video game sequence. Added to that, the twist on utopia was a refreshing one, maybe even somewhat realistic, leaving the viewer satisfied, in some strange way. We don't have to wonder what happend "ever after" on the island after a happy, utopian ending. If you attack any movie from a strictly technical stance you won't enjoy it. I, for one, appreciated the references to familiar movies (Apocalypse now, Lord of the Flies, etc.) that so many other reviewers seem to be discrediting it for. This film is appealing to a specific generation with a specific mindset. Let it go at that. If you hated the movie for its "blatant scene steals, poor direction, and big names," it wasn't meant for you anyhow.
