Reader comments: Babe: Pig in the City

I want everyone who hated this insult to the first film to
know that they're absolutely right. With all the ludicrous
slapstick and even the apparent mention of narcotics and
other vulgar elements, it's pretty clear that we shall
never be able to trust G-rated movies ever again. How could
they take a nice porker and put him in the middle of a
story that's so dark and scary and not in a fitting way?
There are places where a dark and scary themed story for
kids could work(Jim Henson's the Dark Crystal comes to
mind), but this is not one of them. How unkosher. Among the
other reasons why this movie was a torpedo was because
director Miller had made an effort to take the credit for
the whole film away from Chris Noonan, who'd directed the
first film, and bearhug all the script control for himself.
So for the film to be a failiure, I'd say that's what he
got for cheating his co-writer out of the loot. And no
doubt about it, he's also to blame for making this so
filthy. But the real culprits in this case may be some of
the film critics, most notably Roger Ebert, who made no
serious attempt to explain why this film requires some
parental guidance, the inappropriate G-rating
notwithstanding. They did not tell about any of the
elements that were unsuitable for kids. As we see, the
critics are chiefly to blame, even if the film was a flop.
And that's why all critics and their editors must be
slammed for such contempt.

I published a review on my own in which I accidentally said
that BABE: PIG IN THE CITY was rated-PG because the only
advertisements I saw in TV said it was PG and I recently
find out it was G. But I couldn't tell the difference. It
could've been PG because of the unnecessary dark side it
had. The scenes of Babe almost killing Farmer Hoggett. A
prostitute dog. A dog hanging by his neck then almost being
drowned, etc. The new BABE was unappealing and many moments
and scenes un-called for. Especially for children. But that
probably explains why it lost over $80 million.

I threw my video of Babe: Pig in the City in the garbage
can where it can keep company with old tuna cans. No movie
aimed at very young children and bragging a G rating should
have nearly naked women in it. What are we teaching little
kids just beginning to understand male and female roles
with this soft porn in their films. I guess movie execs
are trying to ready them to accept the grotesque portrayal
of sexuality on t.v. and in adult movies. You can't have
my kid!.

fantastic film...though feel it probably works better for
adults than for children..true it is a bit dark but delves
into some simple human truths using animal characters (i.e.
predjudice) absoultley brilliant delightful... amazing
lines by the animals

I was shocked and disappointed at the subject matter for
young children. That was NOT a "G" movie. It was PG, and
I'm extremely upset that I can no longer trust a "G" rating
for my innocent small children. The bikini scene--RAUNCHY;
the animal characters--LESS THAN DESIRABLE. My kids came
out with somber faces. Aren't children entitled to a movie
that makes them feel warm and happy inside? Let's not cram
the big, ugly, adult world down their throats at such a
tender age. Shame on you! I want a refund!

Doesn't come close to the charm of the original. I agree with the DN review.
