Candidate survey
What is your top priority for the United States?
Response:
The greatest problem this country has is out-of-control federal spending. My top priority is to cut wasteful spending, stimulate the economy by lowering capital gains and personal income taxes, and promote economic freedom through less government regulation and intrusion into our lives.
Describe your solution to the U.S. illegal immigration problem. What specifically should be done about the over 10-million illegal immigrants who are now in the United States? Do you favor or oppose some kind of pathway to legal status for the current illegal immigrants?
Response:
Our first priority should be to legal citizens, and then we should prioritize those who want to come here legally. Our current system is failing by giving those with closest proximity and a willingness to break our laws favor over those who are willing to enter the country legally.
It is time to do right. Everyone will benefit. It is for this reason we must elect political leaders willing to solve this difficult issue.
I have committed to vote based on these principles:
FIX LEGAL IMMIGRATION
REJECT AMNESTY
LOCK DOWN THE BORDER, ENFORCE VISAS
HAVE THE POLITICAL WILL TO ENFORCE THE CURRENT LAWS
GET RID OF REWARDS & INCENTIVES TO BE HERE ILLEGALLY
GIVE BUSINESS THE TOOLS & ALIGN FINANCIAL INCENTIVES
INSIST ON ASSIMILATION
Do you support the Affordable Care Act (health care reform)? If not, how would you fix America's health care crisis?
Response:
I absolutely oppose Obama Care. We should take a market-based approach to fixing the country's healthcare problems. I favor solutions such as insurance portability, free-market competition and transparency. I will work to repeal Obama Care.
What can be done to improve the U.S. economy? How will you help?
Response:
In order for the economy to thrive, businesses need some regulatory certainty. With looming tax increases, the healthcare mandates and a myriad of new regulations, businesses don't have the confidence they need to expand and hire.
Economic freedom, lower taxes and fewer regulations are the solutions to our economic problems. Some specific actions I'm in favor of are to reduce the capital gains tax rate to 10% and reduce the corporate income tax to a flat 10%. This will eliminate the wide array of corporate loopholes, incentivize business in the U.S.A., increase investment, simplify the tax code and ultimately lead to increased receipts to the federal treasury.
Utah is famous for its beautiful landscapes. What will you do to protect and promote these areas?
Response:
While there are national treasures worthy of federal protection, there are also lands that should be returned to private ownership. For example, in 1997 the Clinton Administration identified 3.3 million acres of land that the federal government does not need. If the land serves no public purpose, and is 'identified for disposal' I'm in favor of returning it to private ownership. There are more than 132,000 acres of such land in Utah.
The federal government also needs to stop putting such onerous restrictions on access to our public lands. They are our lands. We need access for outdoor enthusiasts and responsible energy development. Payment In Lieu of Taxes (PILT) payments to Utah continue to be under funded.
What are your views on federal funding for embryonic and adult stem cell research?
Response:
I am in favor of stem cell research. However, there is a huge difference between embryonic and adult stem cell research. We have not seen the scientific breakthroughs with embryonic stem cells that we have with adult stem cells. This is also an ethical and moral issue. I believe in the sanctity of human life and therefore oppose federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
Are you willing to work with members of other political parties to accomplish changes in Washington?
Response:
I don't care whose idea it is. If it's a good one, I'll get behind it.
What are your views on nuclear testing?
Response:
I'm opposed to the importation of foreign nuclear waste. There is, however, a need for reasonable, responsible nuclear testing for the security of the American people.
When you are forming an opinion on an issue, who do/will you ask for advice and information?
Response:
I use the Constitution of the United States as the foundation for my policymaking. I truly believe that the best hope for Utah, and for the United States of America, is to return to the core Constitutional and conservative principles of fiscal discipline, limited government, accountability and a strong national defense.
What is the one personal trait/characteristic that you want voters to know about you, and why is that important in this race?
Response:
I have done exactly what I promised I would do, which is to represent Utah to Washington, not Washington to Utah. And I really like bacon cheeseburgers.
