Obituary: Abbie Scholes Godfrey
1907 ~ 2003
Abbie Godfrey, 96, died peacefully in her sleep Friday, November 28, 2003 at the home of her daughter Joann Jackson in Centerville, Utah.
She was born July 8, 1907 in Logan, Utah, the daughter of Frederick Scholes and Abbie Burnham, the seventh of 11 children - Burnham, Lucile, Elinor, Stanley, Sarah Jane (Jennie), Wallace, Francis, Fred, Edward and Harold - and survived them all. She graduated from Brigham Young College in the final class, and later from USU. She taught school for two years in Clarkston, Utah where she met H. Elbert Godfrey. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple June 19, 1929. He died February 14, 1987. They had seven children and also raised a niece and nephew Margaret and David Loughney. Two children died in infancy-Gover and Alice. The family moved from Clarkston to a farm in Riverside, near Blackfoot, Idaho in 1940. After her children were all in school Abbie taught at Riverside Elementary, Dist. 52 until retirement. In 1973-74 they served in the Alberta/Saskatchewan mission, in Prince Albert. Abbie served in many ward and stake church positions as a leader and teacher, and with Elbert in the Idaho Falls Temple. They also did extensive genealogy name extraction. In 1990 she moved to the 14th Ward in Salt Lake, but spent winters in Calif. and Arizona with her children. Since 1995 she resided with Joan and Rodney Jackson in Centerville, but maintained her Idaho home where she spent summers. The family expresses thanks to Aspen and also Vista Care Hospices.
She is survived by Richard (Clare), Union City, CA; Paul (Karin), San Jose, CA; Dennis (Amye), Glendale, AZ; Elder David (JoAnn) Loughney, San Juan, Costa Rica; Joann (Rodney) Jackson, Centerville, UT; Elinor (Alan) Hyde, Salt Lake City, and Margaret (Norman, deceased) Lent, St. George; 37 grandchildren; nine-step-grand children; 96 great-grand children; 29 step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grand children; 18 step-great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Jesse (Dorreen) Godfrey, Clarkston; sisters-in-law, Iva Godfrey, Riverside, UT; Norma Godfrey, Logan; Wanda Scholes, American Fork; and Orale Carver, Provo. Also preceded in death by two grandchildren, two great-grand children, one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be held Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Brookhurst LDS Chapel, 1125 North 400 West, Centerville, Ut. Friends may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main and Saturday morning from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment-Clarkston, Utah. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Perpetual Education Fund in care of local LDS Bishops.
