— LDS GENERAL CONFERENCE —

April showers a given for conference

General conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is this weekend, and that normally means precipitation is likely — right? Yes indeed, says the National Weather Service.

Tanner Barr, 4, of Sandy plays with umbrella. Those attending conference will need umbrellas as well.

Saturday should be showery, but Sunday should be a bit nicer, falling in the partly cloudy range, predicts William J. Alder, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service regional headquarters in Salt Lake City. Highs Saturday will be 50 to 55, while Sunday will warm up to 55 to 60.
In the period 1888-1997, 55 percent of all LDS Church general conferences held in Salt Lake City had wet weather. If you take April conferences alone, 66 percent have been wet.
"This is not too unusual since April is the wettest month of the year in Salt Lake City," Alder said.
The wettest April conference was in 1921 when 1.19 inches of precipitation fell. In 1955, 12.9 inches of snow fell during the conference. On April 2 of that year 9.6 inches of snow blanketed Salt Lake City.
