Logan gets a pick for another BYU defensive T.O. gained
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 2:09 p.m.
Brian Logan intercepted a Wyoming pass that brought in reserve QB Riley Nelson in place of Max Hall.
Hall took to the sidelines with one of his best performances as a BYU quarterback. On the day he completed 22 of 20 passes for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns. Only one of his incompletions was an errant pass and that was in the first half. His second incompletion was a throw-away. He used his legs to keep drives alive
After the turnover, Nelson ran on a designed keeper for 17 yards to Wyoming's five yard line.
The Cougars took what appeared to be 48-0 lead on a 20-yard field goal by Mitch Payne with 2:02 left in the third quarter. But after an official review of the play, BYU had 12 men on the field and received a penalty.
After backing up for a 35-yard field goal, Payne missed it. BYU leads 45-0.
This take will conclude my game blog, seeing that this is now an official blowout and I'll start working on stories for the online edition and the print newspaper after getting down to the sidelines and locker room for some interviews.
Thanks for joining in.
BYU defense gains fumble, JJ scores
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
BYU took a 45-0 lead on Wyoming with 7:17 left in the third quarter on a 15-yard screen pass from Max Hall to J.J. DiLuigi, who scored standing up on a beat-down Cowboy defense.
That pass play gave Hall 312 yards on 20 of 22 passes good for 4 TDs. Brandon Bradley caused the fumble on a Wyoming back and the ball was scooped up by safety Shawn Doman at Wyoming's 38.
BYU increases margin 38-0 at 10:10 third
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 1:53 p.m.
Bryan Kayria scored from two-yards out to put the Cougars up 38-zip on a drive that featured some power running by Harvey Unga.
Unfortunately for Unga, he limped off the field right before the Cougars scored and is being examined by trainer and doctors.
On this drive, BYU got the benefit of an obvious P.I. on a Wyoming safety who hit Dennis Pitta in the endzone before he hauled in a pass for a sure score. Luke Ashworth had a 15-yard catch and JJ had a solid 11-yard run inside Wyoming's 20 to aid the drive.
BYU 31-0 at halftime
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 1:18 p.m.
The Cowboys converted their first third down and used a fourth-down converstion to get to BYU's 7 yard line.
From there, the Cowboys tried a last-ditch scoring play with 4 seconds to play that failed. It was a pass to Orlando Arnold that sailed over his head in the corner of the end zone.
BYU walks into the locker room with a 31-0 lead.
BYU 31-0 with 4:24 left in second quarter
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 1:06 p.m.
Manase Tonga got his second touchdown against Wyoming with a stand-up six-yard run to put the Cougars up 31-0.
BYU's football team looks invincible against the Pokes. Everything they do on offense and defense is working almost flawlessly.
BYU has 358 total yards to just 25 for the Cowboys.
The Cougars are trying everything from screens and bombs while mixing in Unga and Pitta for good measure. Wyoming has no clue how to stop BYU's offensive rhythm so far in this game and it's on the verge of becoming a rout.
Jacobson bomb puts Cougars up 24-0
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 12:58 p.m.
Heeeeeeeee's back.
On his second play of this game since sitting out with a hamstring pull, McKay Jacobson hooked up with Max Hall for a 79-yard bomb to put the Cougars up 24-0.
Jacobson got behind the Wyoming corner, waited for a pass and hen took off sprinting about 50 yards for a touchdown. The corner, Marcell Gibson, from Jacobson's hometown of Dallas, Texas, could not catch Jacobson and attempted to dive for his legs at about the 5.
BYU's defense just stopped Wyoming again and now the Cougar offense will attempt to continue to roll. Wyoming looks dejected and spanked.
Tonga catch puts BYU up 17-0
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 12:44 p.m.
The first quarter of this game ended with Wyoming gaining zero yards on offense.
Meanwhile, Max Hall hit Manase Tonga on a play-action fake bootleg pass to put the Cougars up 17-0 with 13:12 to play in the second quarter.
BYU offense looking unpredictable and the defense is confusing Wyoming early.
Payne FG puts Cougars up 10-0
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 12:32 p.m.
BYU's defense stopped Wyoming's first possession at mid-field and then the Cougars marched down field to where the drive stalled after two run plays got nothing and a pass to Manase Tonga gained just two years.
Payne's field goal of 36 yards put the Cougars up 10-0.
BYU is switching looks on defense before the snap, trying to confuse Wyoming's true freshman QB.
DiLuigi lifts BYU to 7-0 start at Wyoming
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 12:16 p.m.
Maybe the Cougars have their swagger back afterall.
Right after sophomore J.J. DiLuigi caught a 44-yard touchdown pass on a third and seven play, he started doing a River Dance, or a form of clogging. Anyway, it appeared to something Irish from this Italian fireplug.
That play completed an 80-yard scoring drive for the Cougars and ate up 4:43 on the game clock. Key plays were three five-yard runs by Unga and a 13-yard pass to Jacobson. DiLuigi also had an 18-yard screen pass and run on the second play of the game.
Not a bad start. Now comes the defense.
BYU readies for kickoff against Wyoming
DeseretNews.com blogger | Nov. 7, 2009 at 11:37 a.m.
The 6-2 Cougars and 4-4 Cowboys will at least have a sunny, semi-warm day to get down to the nitty gritty here in Laramie today.
Temperatures should be in the low 50s. Looking at warmups right now, WR McKay Jacobson appears ready to go.
Jeff Call and I will be covering this game for the Desnews. We've also got a photographer filing art for the entire experience.
I'll be writing an in-game blog and filing takes several times per quarter. Other asignments include writing a halftime and end of game online story, plus a column and sidebar.
