MWC baseball flexing muscle

Football and basketball are not the only sports where Mountain West Conference teams are making a splash on the national stage these days.

A month into the baseball season, MWC teams are piling up impressive victories over opponents from BCS conferences. And, no, it isn't just TCU who is doing it either.

New Mexico made headlines late last month when the Lobos claimed two victories over Texas to win a season opening three game series with the Longhorns. What made it significant is Texas was ranked no. 1 in the country at the time and playing the Lobos at home. New Mexico followed that up by earning a pair of road victories over USC to take a three game series from the Trojans last week.

The Horned Frogs have been a fixture in the top 10 early in the season. They also own some notable victories over BCS conference foes. They beat Texas Tech and Missouri on back-to-back nights. Also, TCU bested non-BCS power Cal-State Fullerton at the end of February — winning twice to claim a three game series from the then no. 6 Titans.

San Diego State has also had some success against ranked BCS and non-BCS opponents. The Aztecs were swept in a season opening series against no. 22 Oklahoma. But they bounced back to win twice in a three game series against no. 19 San Diego and beat no. 23 Kentucky a week ago.

What does this mean for BYU and Utah? Simply put, the road to a potential Mountain West baseball title is going to be tougher than ever before for both schools.
