Flagging heads

It definitely looks odd – a metal rod with a flag that sticks out of a helmet.

It's called, well, the helmet flag. It's sold by a Draper company. And the Utah Legislature is considering allowing helmet flags as a substitute for the off-road requirement of flags attached to vehicles.

Sen. Brent Goodfellow, D-West Valley City, is sponsoring the bill, SB19, for people who enjoy riding around sand dunes such as Little Sahara Recreation Area.

Two weeks ago, SB19 failed in the Senate. But Goodfellow was able to revive the bill, after working out a compromise with Sen. Jon Greiner, R-Ogden, who had some safety concerns about whether children wearing the helmet flag could be seen as well as they would be if they had a flag on the backs of their vehicles since children are short. While the original bill allowed motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle riders to use the helmet flag, the compromised bill is only going to allow motorcyclists use it.

The idea, Goodfellow said, is that motorcycles are higher off the ground than ATVs, making the flag easier to see.

The bill has passed the Senate and is headed to the House.
