Jimmer works out for NBA teams, more on Loyd's release

I just left a press briefing by BYU basketball coach Dave Rose, mainly on Michael Loyd Jr.'s departure from BYU and the status of Jimmer Fredette's workouts this week with NBA teams.

Rose said Fredette worked out on Monday for Oklahoma City and again today for the Boston Celtics. He has another workout scheduled for Thursday and another for Friday, but Rose would not disclose which teams those were for. However, other teams wanted to run Fredette through some drills but there was not enough time for more than four workouts before Saturday's deadline to remain in the NBA draft or return to BYU. Fredette will return to Provo on Friday night and then meet with Rose and family members on Saturday morning to make a decision.

As for why Loyd won't be part of the BYU basketball program next year, without going into specifics, Rose said Loyd wasn't consistent in his obligations to BYU in several aspects, both on the court and off. From what I've heard, even though Loyd was academically eligible, it was a challenge for him. He also struggled to abide by some of BYU's strict social standards. It was difficult for Rose to let Loyd go, and it was tough for Loyd to leave.

"This was as difficult (of a coaching decision) as they come," Rose said.

Rose said his relationship with Loyd and his family is still good. But as BYU's statement said that announced Loyd's departure, it was a mutual decision.
