SALT LAKE CITY - The Deseret News received top awards in print, online and photojournalism Thursday, garnering more first place and overall awards than any other media in its circulation category in the 2014 Utah Idaho Spokane Associated Press Association contest.

Deseret News Journalist Amy Joi O'Donoghue received first place honors for beat reporting and received recognition for investigative work into the solar industry and her exploration of the impact of the oil boom in North Dakota on that state and on Utah.

Photojournalist Laura Seitz won for best portfolio and photo essay, detailing the plight of the homeless, among other work, highlighting the 15 awards won by the Deseret News photo staff.

And multi-media journalists Jeffrey Allred, Emilee Eagar, Christian Ross and Matt Montgomery took home top online honors for "Brylee's Wings," the intimate account of one little girl's struggle to survive and the joy that can come to a family even in the face of such a struggle.

“It is always nice to be recognized by one’s peers, but it is especially gratifying to see our in-depth work on issues that matter to Utah’s families getting this kind of professional attention and recognition," Paul Edwards, editor of the Deseret News, said.

The Deseret News won for General Excellence Online, while its competitor, The Salt Lake Tribune, won for General Excellence.

The Tribune was also recognized with the William H. Cowles III Memorial Award for Public Service for its work "Investigations into alleged fraud lead Utah's attorney general to resign." That work was also honored in the investigative journalism category in relation to the John Swallow investigation.

Here are the winners in the circulation over 50,000 category.
