SALT LAKE CITY — Except for an upset victory by Utah two years ago, the BYU women’s soccer team has gotten the better of the Utes lately, winning five of the last six meetings between the two rivals, including a 1-0 victory last year in Provo.

For a change, the Utes may be the favored team when the two schools meet at Ute Field Friday at 5 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).

The Utes are coming off a third-place finish in the Pac-12 last year and are 3-0-1 to start the 2014 season, while the Cougars have lost some key players from last year’s squad and are 1-1-2, including a home loss to Baylor on Monday.

The Utes' top two scorers are Kaycee Buckley and Katie Taylor with five points apiece, and the strength of the team may be the backline headed by Megan Trabert and Nykell Seymour. Goalkeeper Lindsey Luke has been strong in the goal all season, allowing just two goals.

BYU was picked to finish first in the competitive West Coast Conference, just ahead of Portland and Santa Clara. The Cougars’ three goals this year have been scored by Ashley Hatch, Elena Medeiros and Elisabeth Phillips. Katherine Snyder and Hannah Clark have split time as goalkeeper for the Cougars this year, allowing three goals between them with 15 saves.

“BYU has a new team, certainly a good team,’’ said Utah coach Rich Manning. “Our goal is to keep the ball, control the pace of the game and play good defense.’’
