OGDEN — BYU golfer Lea Garner continued her hot play at the Utah Women’s State Amateur, shooting her second-straight 67 Thursday to earn medalist honors at the end of the stroke-play portion of the tournament. Match play begins Friday.
Garner’s 134 total was nine strokes better than San Diego State golfer Sirene Blair, who shot a 4-under-par 68 after a first-round 75. Third place went to Allison Cluff at 146, while Sadie Palmer was next at 148, followed by Tara Green and Kimberly Nyhus at 149.
Kelsey Chugg, the two-time defending champion who will be the No. 1 seed as last year’s winner, shot a 78 after a first-round 80.
Others who will be in the 16-player match-play portion of the tournament are Emily Podlesny, Kendra Dalton, Madi Rooker, Annie Yang, Sue Nyhus, Kristie Jensen, Xena Motes, Brooklyn Anderson and Annette Gaotti.
First-round matches begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, with second-round matches being played in the afternoon. The semifinal matches will be Saturday morning, with the 18-hole final set for Saturday at noon.
