Real Salt Lake striker Alvaro Saborio has broken a bone in his foot and will miss three to four months, the team said Thursday.
Saborio was training with the Costa Rican national team and was a projected to be a starter for the Ticos in the World Cup, which begins June 12.
"Our doctors are conferring with the Costa Rican federation's (doctors)," Trey Fitz-Gerald, RSL vice president of broadcasting and communications, said in an email. "We have seen X-rays, but discussions on course of treatment are ongoing, so timetable is yet to be determined."
CRHoy.com reported that Saborio hurt his foot during a team practice Thursday morning in Costa Rica and promptly left the field. The Ticos are in Group D with England, Uruguay and Italy.
Fitz-Gerald says Saborio fractured his fifth metatarsal, which is the bone that connects the foot to the pinky toe.
