Region 1

SYRACUSE — Davis High's Taylor Cox will head into next week’s 5A state tournament surging with confidence after her performance this week at the Region 1 championships.

The senior won both the 800- and 1,600-meter races, and her time of 2 minutes, 13.03 seconds in the 800 was the best in Utah this year. Her 1,600 time of 5:00.02 was the fourth-best time in the state.

Her performance helped Davis’ girls rack up 179.66 points, more than enough to claim the Region 1 title ahead of second-place Weber (122 points).

Weber’s Johnni Arbon was the only other double winner at the meet, winning both the shot put and discus.

Davis’ boys tallied 250 points to win comfortably ahead of second-place Syracuse (154 points).

Trevor Leavitt won both the 200 and 400 meters to pace the Darts. The performance of the meet, however, was likely turned in by Syracuse’s Colten Yardley. His time of 38.51 in the 300 hurdles was the third-best mark in Utah this year.
