Darrell Loveland, veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, salutes as Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day is observed for the first time at the Capitol rotunda in Salt Lake City on Saturday, March 29, 2014. The law designates March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day to honor and recognize those members of the U.S. armed forces who served during the Vietnam War era for their dedicated service, sacrifice and courage. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed HB275 into law at a ceremony Saturday. The legislation passed unanimously in the Utah House and Senate. The date mirrors March 29, 1973 — the day the last U.S. combat troops withdrew from Vietnam. It is estimated that there are as many as 50,000 Vietnam veterans living in Utah today.
