Letter: Take this case

In the classic movie, “Great Expectations,” a lawyer speaks to Pip. Not wanting to reveal an actual situation, he uses this phrase, “Take this case,” before continuing.

Take this case: A wealthy man asks a banker for a loan. The banker, feeling that it is safe, agrees. The wealthy man comes again for another loan. The banker, with hesitation, loans again. Time passes with still no payments, resulting in legal action. The man loses everything!

Take this case: A nation continues to make loans with no attempt to make payments. How long will the creditors wait? In reality, could we default tomorrow? Could we lose a war with no battles? Will we voters have the courage to tighten our belts and avoid a national bankruptcy?
