Kate Hansen, a sophomore at BYU, recently won the World Cup gold medal in women’s luge to become the first American to win it in 17 years.
Los Angeles Times journalist Bill Plaschke lives in the same neighborhood where Hansen grew up and he wrote a feature on Hansen, who was recently chosen for the U.S. women’s luge Olympic team. She will be competing the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, in less than two weeks.
"It has not hit me at all," Hansen told reporters Saturday afternoon. "When I wake up tomorrow I'll be like, 'Whoa, what happened yesterday?' "
Plaschke also recounted the times she would speed by him on her skateboard as a youngster.
“She would fly past me on her skateboard as I drove up my hilly street in La Cañada,” Plaschke said. “She couldn't have been more than 12 years old. It was a miracle she didn't end up in my windshield.”
