CHARLOTTE, N.C. — That didn't last long.
Less than a week after being assigned to the D-League, Utah Jazz rookies Rudy Gobert and Ian Clark were called up from the Bakersfield Jam. They rejoined the Jazz before Saturday night's game against the Charlotte Bobcats.
Gobert and Clark each played three games for the Jazz's D-League affiliate this past week. The Jam are off until Dec. 28 for a Christmas break, so the NBA team decided to bring their players back for work with the team.
‘They did a great job, getting some time on the floor to play,” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. “We’re happy to have them back with us now.” The 7-1 Gobert, the 27th pick of the 2013 NBA draft, averaged 14 points on 75 percent shooting. The French center also grabbed 13 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per game in his three starts for the Jam.
“Rudy, I thought, did a great job inside of being big, rebounding the ball very well,” Corbin said. “I thought he ran the floor for the most part pretty good.”
Clark, an undrafted shooting guard from Belmont, put up averages of 12.3 points, 4.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds during his D-League stint.
Gobert dressed but didn’t play Saturday. Clark was put on the inactive list for the night with forward Mike Harris.
The two Jazz players were assigned to Bakersfield just before Utah left for its pre-Christmas road trip last Sunday. Corbin said the organization wanted the players to gain experience from getting playing time in the D-League. The coach wants his young guys to get a better feel for the pace of the pro game, too.
Originally, plans were to have them go for up to six games, but injuries prevented that from happening.
“It’s always good for young guys to play,” Corbin said. “If we’re not able to get them the minutes here and the schedule permits us to get them down there, get them a few games in a row, then we’ll look at doing it again.”
Gobert has only played in 17 games with the Jazz so far, averaging 4.6 rebounds, 2.2 points and 0.8 blocks in 10.7 minutes. Clark has seen time in just eight NBA games, totaling 2.8 points in 8.8 minutes.
